PON2 is a member of the paraoxonase gene family, nwhich includes three known members located adjacent to each othernon the long arm of chromosome 7. The encoded protein isnubiquitously expressed in human tissues, membrane-bound, and maynact as a cellular antioxidant, protecting cells from oxidativenstress. Hydrolytic activity against acylhomoserine lactones, nimportant bacterial quorum-sensing mediators, suggests the encodednprotein may also play a role in defense responses to pathogenicnbacteria. Mutations in this gene may be associated with vascularndisease and a number of quantitative phenotypes related tondiabetes.
